Marathon has a decent selection of beaches compared to other Florida keys! And the best part of all, if there’s a dog in your family, all beaches and parks here are dog-friendly! But you MUST clean up after them to keep this privilege for everyone. There’s a beach listed for everyone, whether it’s swimming you’re looking for, some beachfront exercising, or to picnic at sunrise or sunset. Can’t quite find your beach? The Marathon island resorts listed here are beachfront — many with their own private beach.
Here’s a map of the beaches in Marathon, for easy locating.
Sombrero Beach
Sombrero Beach Rd, Marathon, FL 33050
Best for swimming and spending the day
One of the more spacious beaches you’ll find in the Keys, Sombrero Beach is a park and beach for swimming, picnics and volleyball, plus Loggerhead turtle nesting from April to October. It’s a beautiful tranquil beach with picnic area, restrooms and showers, a playground area with swings, and free public parking. It’s an easy location for walking or cycling. If you have your own mask and snorkel, here’s a great place to check out the underwater diversity.
Sunset Park
W Ocean Dr, Key Colony Beach, FL 33051
Best for a picnic at sunset
Sunset Park is a snug beach with picnic tables and benches. Enjoy scenic views and a tranquil ambiance.
This is a beautiful spot to pack a picnic and catch the sunset. No swimming here, but worthwhile to enjoy the view of the clear blue waters.
Coco Plum Beach
Coco Plum Dr, Marathon, FL 33050
Best for catching the sunrise
Coco Plum Beach offers a powder-white beach nearly a mile long with free public parking! Restroom facilities were added recently so it’s not too primitive, but still fairly pristine. Get here early as it’s a great spot to catch the sunrise. Swimming is discouraged due to crocodile sightings and there is seaweed at times – so if you’re picky skip this one.
Oceanfront Park
9805 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL 33050
Best for exercise & physical activity
Oceanfront is a dog-friendly park with an oceanfront field for picnics, kite flying, fishing and launching kayaks. This beach is not for swimming but the view is excellent. There are grass hut pavilions for lounging or picnicking and it’s a great spot to bring the kids, the pets and the kayaks. Outdoor exercise stations allow you to get in a workout while enjoying the scenery and basking in the Florida sun.
